A Quick interview with the Director of this great film

ProCrafts provided a quick Q & A with the Director Habib

ProCrafts: What is the GUTSY film about?

Habib: GUTSY is about alerting women and girls and empowering them against the prejudice and sexual harassment.
Women often face weird types of sexual harassment in many places, and this film specifically exposes work place problems.

ProCrafts: Did you write the scenario based on actual documents or is it a fiction story?

Habib: The scenario is composed based on a great research I completed in a course of a year. As a matter of fact, whatever problems the main character faces, it is a bitter fact and a dark side of our community.

ProCrafts: Some parts of the trailer show that GUTSY is not an Afghan typical movie, so it is felt that you and your team has taken some risk making this film. Please correct me if that guess is wrong.

Habib: Yes, your perception is right. After I completed the script I contacted two of my friends Qasem Hashemi and Fazal Hadi Kafshani cause they had greater communications with the media, and I asked them for helping me casting the lead actor. Then after a couple of days we succeeded in selecting Shabnam in the lead role. That’s the huge part of problem – an Afghan actor appearing in a Western character, the way she puts her clothes, her simple behavior with sympathy yet she doesn’t have any study of the traditional Afghan context. As a result, this situation leads her to prejudice and sexual harassment by her colleagues.

ProCrafts: How long did it take you to complete this film?

Habib: I managed the Production process in forty five days, and exactly filming took 11 days. Having a managed time-schedule, still I had serious timing challenge ahead of my production. Finally, after shootings we edited the film in around 6 months.

ProCrafts: Was GUTSY screened in Afghanistan

Habib: No, it has not been screened in Afghanistan yet. As the film is in some European screens, we will plan regional screens later stage by stage.

ProCrafts expresses gratitude for having Habibullah Honaryar the Director of this film GUTSY in this interview. Here we wrap up this chat with the Director reviewing his experience as the lesson learnt.

The making of this movie was as normal as any other digital processed movie, but the special point about this movie is that most scenes of this movie is filmed in one room. The Director explains that the only possibility handed him were a time-bound shooting schedule, and having a ready story board. These can be the lessons learnt for him and other first time filmmakers for succeeding the first project. The Director added,

“Even though, we had countless timing challenges during our shooting almost every day. A very close focus and sticking to the plan was the winning point, that’s why I succeeded completing GUTSY in eleven (11) days of shooting” – Habib, Director/GUTSY.
